How much water do you really need?

A practical baseline for healthy adults is roughly 30–35 ml per kilogram of body weight per day — this calculator uses 33 ml/kg, then adds about 350 ml per 30 minutes of exercise and extra for hot climates. For a 65 kg person, that's a little over 2 litres on a normal day.

Around 20% of daily fluid typically comes from food (fruits, vegetables, soups, yogurt), and tea, coffee and milk all count toward intake — the idea that caffeinated drinks "don't count" is a myth at normal consumption levels.

Signs you're getting it right

Can you drink too much?

Yes. Forcing several litres beyond thirst — especially during endurance exercise without electrolytes — can dangerously dilute blood sodium (hyponatremia). More is not better; matched-to-need is better. People with kidney or heart conditions may need fluid limits and should follow their doctor's guidance rather than any calculator.

Avoid forced overdrinking

Excessive water in a short period can be dangerous. Kidney, heart or liver disease may require an individual fluid plan from a clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Is 8 glasses of water a day correct?
It's a reasonable rough average but not a scientific rule. Needs scale with body weight, activity and climate — this calculator's weight-based estimate is more personal than a fixed glass count.
Do tea and coffee count toward water intake?
Yes. At normal consumption, caffeinated drinks contribute to hydration. Very high caffeine intakes have a mild diuretic effect, but the fluid still counts on balance.
Should I drink more water to lose weight?
Water before meals can modestly reduce intake, and replacing sugary drinks with water cuts real calories. But water itself does not burn fat — the calorie deficit does.
How much extra should I drink during exercise?
A common guide is around 400–800 ml per hour of moderate exercise, more in heat. For sessions over 60–90 minutes, include electrolytes rather than plain water alone.
Does coffee count toward fluid intake?
Yes, normal amounts contribute fluid. Very high caffeine intake can still disturb sleep, heart rate or digestion.
Should urine always be completely clear?
No. Pale yellow is a practical general sign. Completely clear urine all day can occur with over-drinking.
Do coffee and tea count toward hydration?
Yes, typical amounts contribute fluid despite containing caffeine. Water remains a simple default, and very sugary or alcoholic drinks are not equivalent hydration choices.
