What this score measures

Five markers that together predict real-world fitness and long-term health better than any single gym number: resting heart rate (a window into cardiovascular efficiency — trained hearts beat slower), weekly cardio volume against the WHO's 150-minute guideline, strength training frequency (independently linked to longevity), a practical stair test of functional capacity, and sleep — the recovery layer every other marker depends on.

Improving the score fastest

Work the weakest marker, not the strongest. A high resting HR responds within weeks to consistent easy cardio (zone 2 — see the heart rate calculator). Zero strength sessions to two per week is the single biggest health jump in the list — bodyweight counts. Getting badly winded on stairs usually just reflects the cardio gap. And chronically short sleep quietly caps everything: recovery, hunger control, and next-day energy for training.

An honest note on fitness "scores"

This is a lifestyle self-assessment, not a lab VO₂max test — it can't see your genetics or medical history. Its job is to point at the weakest link and re-test you monthly. Direction of change matters more than the absolute number.

Change one bottleneck first

Improving sleep, aerobic activity, strength or resting heart rate may lift several areas at once. Choose the change that is both important and realistic this month.

Use repeatable measurements

Take resting heart rate under similar morning conditions and assess training with the same questions. Consistency makes the trend more meaningful.

Keep medical context separate

A wellness score cannot rule out disease or explain chest pain, fainting, severe fatigue or sudden performance loss. Those symptoms need professional assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good resting heart rate?
60–100 bpm is the normal adult range; below 60 in a regular exerciser usually reflects good cardiovascular fitness. A persistently high resting HR alongside symptoms deserves a doctor's check.
How much exercise per week do I actually need?
The WHO guideline: at least 150 minutes of moderate cardio (or 75 vigorous) plus strength work twice weekly. That combination is where the biggest health returns concentrate.
Is strength training necessary if I already run?
Yes — muscle-strengthening activity is independently linked with lower all-cause mortality even in people who meet cardio guidelines, and it protects the joints running depends on.
How fast can my fitness score improve?
Resting HR and stair capacity respond in 4–8 weeks of consistent training. Re-test monthly; a rising score at the same effort is fitness improving by definition.
Can a strong athlete receive a lower score?
Yes, especially if sleep, resting heart rate or weekly balance is poor. The tool rewards broad health habits rather than one sport-specific performance.
Should I train harder when the score is low?
Not automatically. Low sleep or poor recovery may call for easier activity and routine changes before more intensity.
How quickly should my fitness score improve?
Some behaviours can improve immediately, while resting heart rate and performance often need several weeks. Recheck every four to eight weeks rather than daily, and focus on the direction of change.
