Four ways to estimate aerobic capacity
The calculator supports four field methods. Each estimates VO₂ max differently, so compare future results using the same method.
Interpreting the result
VO₂ max generally declines with age and differs across populations, so the visual category is a broad screening band—not a diagnosis or race predictor. Heat, altitude, illness, poor pacing and inaccurate distance can shift a field-test score.
How to improve aerobic capacity
- Build most weekly volume at an easy conversational intensity.
- Add one controlled tempo or interval session after a base is established.
- Increase training gradually and keep recovery days.
- Retest every 6–8 weeks under similar conditions.
Performance-friendly visual
The gauge uses one SVG circle and a single stroke-offset transition; zone bars transition once when results appear. This avoids canvas redraws and heavy effects while remaining readable on small screens.
Practical guide for using this result
Choosing a method
Use the same validated field test each time. Running tests suit people able to run safely; a walking or heart-rate method may be more appropriate for others.
Interpreting the band
Age- and sex-based bands are broad population references. The change in your own result under similar conditions is often more useful.
Retesting
Allow several weeks of consistent training and repeat under similar weather, surface and recovery conditions.
How to interpret your aerobic-capacity result
Use the estimate as a repeatable fitness marker rather than a laboratory diagnosis. The method, pacing and test conditions matter as much as the final number.
Compare like with like
Retest with the same protocol, route, footwear and weather where possible. A change measured under similar conditions is more useful than comparing a hard run with an easy walking estimate.
Turn the number into training
Most people improve by combining easy aerobic volume with one or two controlled higher-intensity sessions each week. Increase workload gradually and keep recovery days genuinely easy.
Know when to stop
Chest pain, faintness, unusual breathlessness or an irregular heartbeat are reasons to stop a field test and seek medical advice. Do not perform maximal testing when acutely unwell.
