How the US Navy method works
Developed by the Naval Health Research Center, this method estimates body fat from body circumferences rather than skinfolds or scales. It needs only a flexible tape measure, and for most people it lands within about 3–4 percentage points of laboratory methods — accurate enough to track trends over time.
How to measure correctly
- Neck: just below the larynx (Adam's apple), tape sloping slightly downward at the front.
- Waist: men measure at the navel; women at the narrowest point of the torso.
- Hips (women): at the widest point around the buttocks.
- Keep the tape level and snug, but never compressing the skin. Measure twice and average.

Women naturally carry more essential fat than men — it is required for hormonal and reproductive health, not a flaw to eliminate.
Body fat vs BMI
Unlike BMI, which only relates weight to height, body fat percentage distinguishes fat mass from muscle. The two together give a much clearer picture than either alone: BMI for a quick population-level screen, body fat for what your weight is actually made of.

What the result represents
The calculator estimates the proportion of total body mass that is fat. It does not directly measure visceral fat, muscle quality or metabolic health.
How to monitor progress
Repeat every four to eight weeks under similar conditions. Shorter intervals often show measurement noise rather than real tissue change.

Use a range that supports energy, menstrual function, training and health rather than pursuing the lowest possible number.

What the Navy method measures
The US Navy equation uses height and body circumferences as a practical proxy for body composition. It is not a scan, and small tape-placement differences can noticeably change the estimate.
Why BMI cannot calculate body fat directly
BMI does not contain waist, neck, hip or composition data. Equations that predict body fat from BMI add assumptions about age and sex, so the result is generally less individual than a careful circumference method.
Track the trend consistently
Measure at the same landmarks, time of day and hydration state every four to eight weeks. A steady pattern is more meaningful than chasing day-to-day decimal changes.
